In addition to thanksgiving and harvest, the autumn exquinox is a time of balance. The word equinox itself comes from the Latin word aequinoctium - aequus meaning equal and nox meaning night. During both the spring and fall equinox, day and night are nearly equal. Enforcing the equilibrium is the fact that the sun enters Libra, a sign of balanced scales, on the morning of the autumn equinox. Celebrating balance means appreciating the light and dark within your life. What does the light bring you? Think of the sun, the day, the progress you make during that timeframe and what you draw to you. And what does the dark do for you? Think of letting go, of cleansing, of the night, and, especially, of the moon. After all, we’re entering her jurisdiction as we travel to the darker half of the year!

TIME: We take pride in assembling each and every Sabbat Box by hand, no matter the amount of time it takes. We don't just throw your items inside a flat rate priority mail box like some other subscription box companies out there. We want your Sabbat Box to be delivered to you as beautifully as it left us, and it takes a tremendous amount of time to complete this task.
This includes folding the boxes together, individually cutting each sheet of tissue paper by hand, weighing out the crinkle paper for each box, designing the flyers, coupons, stickers and brochures to be printed professionally by commercial printers, individually placing each item within their corresponding bags, individually assembling the boxes, individually packing the tissue paper within each box by hand and also putting together and creating product packing. This timeframe doesn't even include the efforts made to manage the Sabbat Box website, the back end billing system, social media management, customer service inquiries, accounting, marketing, purchasing, networking, and so on. This is a labor of love and we enjoy serving the community!

The weather cools, a chill settling in the air. The leaves begin to turn to fiery colors: Yellow. Red. Orange. The spectrum creates a rainbow over the landscape as they fall to the ground, filling the air with an earthy scent. The autumn equinox is near.
The equinox itself is a scientifically observable event when the tilt of the earth is so that the sun passes over the earth’s equator. Because of this, the sun rises exactly east and sets exactly west rather than at a slight tilt towards the poles and we experience a near-equal day and night. This event occurs twice a year: Once at spring and once in the fall. In 2018, the Autumn Equinox will take place on September 22nd at 4:02 PM EDT.
For pagans and witches, the fall equinox is also known as Mabon, one of three harvest festivals on the Wheel of the Year. We owe the name "Mabon" itself to Aidan Kelly in the 1970s, a reference to characters, or perhaps gods, from Welsh lore. That being said, though the name is relatively new, the concept of a celebration occurring around the fall equinox is not. Oschophoria was a festival in ancient Greece that honored the grape harvest and wine. Eighteenth century Bavarians celebrated Oktoberfest in the last week of September, a festival that continues today. Even the US holiday Thanksgiving originally occurred on October 3rd, just a week and a half after the equinox. It wasn’t until 1863 that it was moved to November and 1941 before it settled on the date it is today. As such, the modern Autumn Equinox as a pagan festival is one of thanksgiving and gratitude.
Much of this thanksgiving tradition with Mabon is owed to its timing around the fall harvest. Customs of the holiday include this, creating themes of completion and goal achievement. This is a great time to reflect upon the past to see if you have reaped what you’ve sown from seeds planted in the spring. What goals did you want to achieve at the beginning of the year? Have they come to fruition? What do you need to do to find completion? This might even mean cutting your losses to move forward, much as a farmer might do with a dud crop.

Mabon has always had a close association with the moon. The full moon near the fall equinox, the Harvest Moon, is probably the most well-known. This particular full moon derives its name from the farmers working late into the night, the crops illuminated by its brilliant light. The Harvest Moon is sometimes called the Wine Moon as well because it rises in a beautiful orange-red splendor, akin to the fiery colors of the autumn leaves below. Moreover, for those that believe in the goddess, Mabon is when she officially enters her “waning” phase – another emphasis on the connection of this equinox with the moon.
But this isn’t all. As stated earlier, the equinox isn’t exactly a perfect balance of night and day – it is only nearly equal. That perfect equality, called equilux rather than equinox, occurs a few days before the actual equinox itself. We owe this offset on the day the sun passes over the equator’s plane to atmospheric diffusion and, of course, our beloved moon. Earth’s satellite causes the planet’s orbit to vary from a perfect ellipse. It’s also why we have the tilt, and thus the equinoxes, in the first place. Thus the moon has a profound effect on this sabbat in particular!
Because of the fall equinox’s especially close connection to the moon, Sabbat Box would like to announce its Mabon box theme: Moon Magick II. Our first Moon Magick themed Sabbat Box was presented on Ostara of last year. It seems only appropriate to present the second of this theme on the mirror holiday to the first. Moon Magick deals with the darkness and the ways we attempt to illuminate it, much like a candle in the night. It is spiritual, cleansing, divinatory and divine. It’s also natural, emphasizing harvested herbs akin to the harvest of the fall.
This box will assist subscribers on working with not just the Harvest Moon in its full status but every phase during this time – and throughout the year! The items you’ll discover will be educational, interactive and fully integrated with the moon herself, and will include more exclusive items just for our members. The Wheel of the Year is turning toward the autumnal equinox, which means that as the days get shorter, folks are looking toward winter and being prepared for the longer nights ahead. This season has traditionally been the time when crops that would be stored for the winter would be brought in, and within the neo-pagan and wiccan communities, this time of year is known as the second harvest sabbat, or Mabon. The gathering of food stores also meant the gathering of people at this time as well: people in their communities would come together to share and trade their bounties with each other, ensuring that no one within their friends and families would be without. A feast of the harvest would offer a time to celebrate and give thanks for the bounty that would sustain them through the fallow times until the coming spring and planting season! Every culture's ancestors had a different way of honoring the earth and celebrating the harvest season, each special in their own way.

While the time of gathering the first fruits of the harvest season has passed (Lammas), the second harvest, was considered to be the grand gathering time of food and the needed staples for storage in order for our ancestors to get through the coming winter. Though prepping to survive winter was one of the main purposes behind the harvest season, many cultures from around the world would take time during this season to come together and celebrate the fruits of their labor, and to feast and share in the abundance of the season with family and friends.
Aside from celebrating our blessings and the abundance from the earth this sabbat; the spirit of Mabon and the autumnal equinox is also associated with balance. The witch’s broom, also known as a besom, has long been steeped deep in lore and symbolism, and has played an important role within the craft throughout generations. What once started as a simple domestic utensil used by people to physically clean their homes, over time ended up becoming an important spiritual tool, protective talisman, and a sacred object within the home, and within the craft.
In Wicca, the besom is used ritually when casting circle to purify a space by “spiritually sweeping” away impure energy. This stems from the fact that besoms were originally made with ash handles and birch bristles (ash being a masculine wood representing life, good luck and abundance) and birch (a feminine wood, representing protection and purification) in European folklore.
Your besom is meticulously woven and was made to be very durable so it can be used to physically clean your altar or sacred space if you wish, or it can also be hung over your door to purify those coming into your home. It can also be used ritually to purify space. Each besom comes with a broom/besom info parchment filled with history and lore of brooms, perfect for a book of shadows.

We don't just throw your items inside a flat rate priority mail box like some other subscription box companies out there. We want your Sabbat Box to be delivered to you as beautifully as it left us, and it takes a tremendous amount of time to complete this task.
This includes folding the boxes together, individually cutting each sheet of tissue paper by hand, weighing out the crinkle paper for each box, designing the flyers, coupons, stickers and brochures to be printed professionally by commercial printers, individually placing each item within their corresponding bags, individually assembling the boxes, individually packing the tissue paper within each box by hand and also putting together and creating product packing. This timeframe doesn't even include the efforts made to manage the Sabbat Box website, the back end billing system, social media management, customer service inquiries, accounting, marketing, purchasing, networking, and so on. This is a labor of love and we enjoy serving the community!

• THE SECOND HARVEST •
The Wheel of the Year is turning toward the autumnal equinox here in the northern hemisphere. Day and night will once again be equally divided on September 22nd of this year, and from there, the night will overtake the day into the winter.
While the time of the first fruits of the harvest--celebrated at Lammas--has passed, and the earlier fruits and grains are in, the second harvest is the grand gathering of food for storage to get through the long, dark winter ahead. Apples! Pumpkins! Squash! All of the fruits and vegetables we associate with autumn are highlighted and revered at this time.
Throughout history, this time has been marked with a festival of the abundance and bounty of these crops, bringing friends, neighbors, and family together to support one another as the "lean" times approach. Though nowadays, in most areas around the world, we have grocery stores to get us through the "lean" times, but in earlier days, if tragedy or lack struck, a neighbor’s hospitality made the difference between surviving the winter or not. This coming together to share a feast was a way to bond the community and a reminder to look out for one another, while showing gratitude for what we have (a roof over our heads, food to eat, and our health).
It is the spirit of these Second Harvest traditions and rituals that we focus our attention for this year’s Mabon Sabbat Box. We have curated a selection of items that will help you connect, celebrate, and honor this point in the Wheel of the Year and provide ways to offer thankfulness and gratitude for full storehouses and abundance. This hand-blended ritual oil by Coventry Creations is made with a proprietary blend of essential oils that correspond with protection. One of the main oils within this evil eye blend is juniper. Juniper is an herb that corresponds with protection, and is even believed to have been one of the first herbs used by Mediterranean witches as incense. This Home Protection Sachet is another way to help signify to negative forces and energies to stay away from where you live.
BREAKDOWN
This handcrafted home protection sachet contains a potent blend of herbs, flowers, oils, and stones that were made to banish negative energies and promote protection for your home. You will want to place this sachet near an entry point into your home. Some may hang it above a door or a window, place in a closet, beneath a bed, over your altar, or anywhere protection is desired. Prior to doing so, you will want to ritually charge your sachet/mojo to “breathe life into it.” How you do this is up to you.
You will want to also recharge your sachet/mojo bag every month and crumple the bag every month or so to “wake up” the spirit of the herbs. After six months have gone by you will want to dispose of your sachet and hang a fresh one in its place, if desired. To dispose of the old one, burn it as an offering, thanking the spirits of herbs for their protective energies and bury the stone into the earth. If you cannot burn the bag, you can bury the whole sachet along with the stone instead.

This Mabon’s Sabbat Box is all about protection and working protection magick for the home and for the equinox. One of the favorite items our members like to receive in each box are incense. So, for Mabon we came across these protection stick incense by HEM and just had to include them. HEM is a trusted incense brand around the world, and produces high quality incense. This particular incense contain a blend of herbs and oils that correspond to protection. Burn while working protection magick, casting circle or spiritually cleansing your home.
• PACKING & SHIPPING •
PACKING & SHIPPING: Part of the costs of your box include the box and the packing material itself. The items listed below account for a good portion of the overall costs for the Mabon Sabbat Boxes. Each Mabon Sabbat Box is lined with paper padding and wrapping to add to the surprise of what we’ve curated for you. Shipping is also included in the total price. The average cost to ship Sabbat Boxes has gone up the past few months due to the postal price increases. The cost to ship boxes is roughly $8.50. With that being said, we here at Sabbat Box wish to be as environmentally friendly that we can be and do our best to source packing supplies and material from companies that have the same beliefs we do, in that we want to make as little of an impact as possible on the environment.
BOXES: Your boxes where made from high quality corrugated paper and are 100% recyclable. Try to find another use for your box. They are 9x9x3 on the inside. You could decorate your box to hold some magical supplies or use it again to ship something to someone or save it for another time when you may need it. If you have to get rid of it, please try to recycle it.
BROCHURE: Your brochures are printed on 100% recyclable 16pt paper, which is sourced from sustainable forests.
TISSUE PAPER & FILLING: The blue tissue paper is made from 100% recycled paper and is recyclable. The brown colored filler inside each box is made from scraps of recycled colored crinkle paper and is biodegradable.
STICKERS: The stickers found within your boxes where printed on vinyl with a gloss laminate.

We take pride in assembling each and every Sabbat Box by hand, no matter the amount of time it takes. We don't just throw your items inside a flat rate priority mail box like some other subscription box companies out there. We want your Sabbat Box to be delivered to you as beautifully as it left us, and it takes a tremendous amount of time to complete this task.
This includes folding the boxes together, individually cutting each sheet of tissue paper by hand, weighing out the crinkle paper for each box, designing the flyers, coupons, stickers and brochures to be printed professionally by commercial printers, individually placing each item within their corresponding bags, individually assembling the boxes, individually packing the tissue paper within each box by hand putting together and creating product packing. This timeframe doesn't even include the efforts made to manage the Sabbat Box website, the back end billing system, social media management, customer service inquiries, accounting, marketing, purchasing, networking, and so on. This is a labor of love and we enjoy serving the community!

• PROTECTION MAGICK FOR THE HOME AND FOR THE EQINOX •
The moon rises in the easterly sky, its amber hue reflecting the color of the spent cornfields. The grain has been put up. The darkness of evening creeps in earlier and earlier as the days pass. Someone, somewhere, burns their spent cornstalks, filling the air with the warm fragrance of decay and the last promises of summer fulfilled.You move across the fields and hear things waking to the night: the owl’s low trill, the bat's swoops and circles, the wolf’s whine and howl, the nightingale’s call to arms. It reminds you of the shorter days ahead…the drain of blues and greens and reds under a purpling sky. A thousand stars start to twinkle overhead, its canvas turning blue-black, a cold reminder of how small—insignificant—you are on the moving earth.
The last signs of summer are moving behind us, and the darkness that approaches for winter reminds us that the plenty and abundance of greener times is leaving us for other seasons. Our ancestors would start to prepare well in advanced for the upcoming season, especially moreso for the darker half of the year, because where there was darkness, protection was required. Though Mabon may be commonly celebrated today somewhat as a "Pagan Thanksgiving," being that it is the Sabbat of the great harvest, or a time to honor balance (because the Sabbat falls on the equinox), we decided to focus our intent to finding products aimed at protecting the hearthside when curating this box for Mabon.
It is this spirit of protection, of our ancestors before us preparing and bracing themselves for the hardships of winter ahead, that we honor, celebrate and recognize this Mabon. This was a time to prepare food storages against the coming lack while keeping the hearth fires and bonfires lit for their warmth and light—the light that allows us to see into that darkness and spot any danger that may be around us. This was a time to prepare the home and the hearth, and to rid and banish all that was unwelcome and to make room for all that is.
This year’s Mabon Sabbat Box is a stop on the Wheel of the Year that reminds us to take those steps to protect ourselves and our homes, and to be vigilant against shortages and negative energies in our lives. We have curated a selection of items that hopefully will help prepare your mind and spirit, to enhance that vigilance against the darker days ahead, all while celebrating another turn of the Wheel, and what it has brought to us over the last months. We are grateful for our abundance as we celebrate the feasts of Mabon, but we also create potent magick to protect what is ours and that in which we dwell during the coming darker times.
