Summer Solstice is here, and that means it’s time to celebrate Litha and all the blessings that it brings. As the daylight rules our lives at this time of year, we at Sabbat Box wanted to bring some its greener fruits to you in a collection of items that pertain and assist in herbal magick and green spellwork. While the summer is full of activity and growth, we mirror the world around us and bring light and energy to all that we do.

We rely on our star to light the way in the darkness of the universe, to provide warmth and comfort and to grow our food and, of course, our herbs. Historical pagans placed a great emphasis on the use of herbs for medicine and magick. From the use of bay leaves by the Greek oracles of Delphi to reach a trance state, to the cunning woman living on the outskirts of a European town (providing herbal medicine to the sick townspeople), herbs are infused as a part of our history. When focusing on such a historically significant holiday here at Sabbat Box, we wanted to use a theme that not only celebrated the sun’s hard work but also tied in its historical beliefs. With its major popularity last year, we decided to give it another go for Litha and do an Herbal Witchery--part two!

Common to Hoodoo practices, floor sweeps are a way of combining the mundane with the magical. Sherry Scott, the owner of The Barefoot Witchery, is a Hoodoo Practitioner herself and has a variety of suggestions on how to use Hoodoo floor sweeps in your spiritual practices. This authentic rue water by Light of Anjou was made specially for our Herbal Witchery box. Made up of distilled water, rue infused vodka, essential oils of rue, lavender, lime, and citronella, and is also infused with black tourmaline chips. It is a unique twist to a traditional recipe.
Because of rue’s diverse historical and magickal significance in legend and lore within cultures all around the world, we wanted to find a way to include it within our boxes. One of the more common yet practical ritual applications it is commonly used in combination with today is making rue water with it (especially within Voodoo, Hoodoo, Santeria and Wicca).
Rue water itself has a variety of uses; from protection to purification, success to healing, to spell breaking or road opening. It is particularly known for its ability to break evil eye, attract customers, and bring good fortune. PACKING & SHIPPING: Part of the costs of your box include the box and the packing material itself. The items listed below account for a good portion of the overall costs for the Midsummer Sabbat Boxes. Each Midsummer Sabbat Box is lined with paper padding and wrapping to add to the surprise of what we’ve curated for you. Shipping is also included in the total price for Sabbat Boxes. The average cost to ship boxes is roughly $9.50. Also, we here at Sabbat Box wish to be as environmentally friendly that we can be and do our best to source packing supplies and material from companies that have the same beliefs we do, in that we want to make as little of an impact as possible on the environment, while also keeping the content of your boxes safe as they make their journey to you.
BOXES: Your boxes where made from high quality corrugated paper and are 100% recyclable. Please try to find another use for your box. They are 9x9x3 on the inside. You could decorate your box to hold some magickal supplies or use it again to ship something to someone or save it for another time when you may need it. If you have to get rid of it, please try to recycle it.
BROCHURES: Your brochures are printed on recyclable 16pt paper, which is sourced from sustainable forests.

TIME: We take pride in assembling each and every Sabbat Box by hand, no matter the amount of time it takes. We don't just throw your items inside a flat rate priority mail box like some other subscription box companies out there. We want your Sabbat Box to be delivered to you as beautifully as it left us, and it takes a tremendous amount of time to complete this task.
This includes folding the boxes together, individually cutting each sheet of tissue paper by hand, weighing out the crinkle paper for each box, designing the flyers, coupons, stickers and brochures to be printed professionally by commercial printers, individually placing each item within their corresponding bags, individually assembling the boxes, individually packing the tissue paper within each box by hand and also putting together and creating product packing. This timeframe doesn't even include the efforts made to manage the Sabbat Box website, the back end billing system, social media management, customer service inquiries, accounting, marketing, purchasing, networking, and so on. This is a labor of love and we enjoy serving the community!

The world grows warmer, the days longer and the trees greener. The sun rises high overhead towards the noon-hour as the Wheel of the Year turns once again. Here, we find ourselves nearing the Summer Solstice. But what’s in a word? “Solstice” comes from Latin root words “sol” and “sistere.”
Sol. Sun.
Sistere. Stopped.
Quite literally, “solstice” translates to “the day the sun stood still.” Looking back at what our ancestors must have thought, it’s no surprise as to why! On the solstice, the sun seems to simply stop at the height of the day, hanging in the summer sky.
Ancient Egyptians may have observed the solstice as it corresponded with the Nile’s rise, offering prediction for flooding. Some Greek calendars used the Summer Solstice to mark the start of their new year. Romans celebrated Vestalia, a holiday where married women could enter temples designated for virgins only in order to make offerings to the goddess of the home, Vesta. Ancient Europeans celebrated the solstice with bonfires to add to the sun’s growing energy, encouraging a bountiful harvest. And, of course, we have a number of ancient structures that align with the Summer Solstice, including the ever-popular Stonehenge.
Modern pagans celebrate the solstice as part of the Wheel of the Year, an adaptation of eight ancient pagan holidays of significance. Also known as Litha and Midsummer, the Summer Solstice is the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year as the sun reaches its apex in the astrological sign of cancer. Historically, it was the longest work day available, so we often associate this holiday with achievements, hard work and determination. We light bonfires, make music and celebrate success within our work, with all of the festivities being committed in the name of the sun.

With its popularity last year, we couldn’t think of a theme more representative of this sabbat, or more beloved by our subscribers, than Herbal Witchery – Part Two!
At the time of the Summer Solstice, a number of herbs reach their peak. We see these herbs lining the pathways of the forest in the hot summer sun, dancing in the warm breeze of the fields and climbing their way down the rolling hills to reach the roads we tread. We grow them in our gardens, harvest them from our farms and keep them in small pots near our kitchen. They are available to us at every turn, reaching for our hands, encouraging us to seek their wisdom.
As pagans and witches, we use herbs in a variety of ways, from the simple seasoning of our food to the many magical applications they provide. We anoint our candles with them, grind them into incense, leave them as offerings on our altars and cleanse our homes with them. We store them in our herb cabinets and apothecaries carefully, honoring them and their wisdoms. Many of these herbs have correspondences with solar energy, ensuring success, happiness and fruitful rewards. Every herb is infused with the sun’s light, the warmth of the summer days required to for them to grow. They are, in a word, perfect for the Summer Solstice.
As an integral part of our practices from ancient times to modernity, herbs are often one of the first easily-accessible tools for the budding pagan or witch, and a reliable source of magic for the advanced practitioner. When we compiled this solstice box, we took particular care in curating items that would be of use for any level of practice. Continuing with our theme from last year, we wanted to place a particular focus on the herbs themselves, including items that would be both practically useful and magically inspirational. It is that time once again! Litha/Midsummer, has arrived, meaning the height of the God’s power (and the heat of the season) is in full effect. The fullness of life and abundance is on display, and with it the light of the sun diminishes the darkness and with it brings forth hope for answers to life’s obstacles and revelations of dark mysteries.
This Litha we decided to focus on onee particular recipient of all this solar energy: herbs. It is now time to start to gather those green plants--even the ones that many may associate as “weeds”--and add them to our magickal cabinet for future use.
Herbs are not just for cooking and natural medicines, but they offer us a way incorporate their various and unique correspondent energies into our spiritual practices. Whether sprinkled on fire, steeped in tea, or any other of the myriad applications of herbs in magickal practice, herbs give us a direct gift from the earth to incorporate into ourselves and provide a boundless connection to our world and environment.

With the summer solstice upon us, we look to the sky to honor the sun and all that it bestows upon us, just like our ancestors did. It is this very sun, our own special star, that provides for us as a people, the ability to survive and flourish (as well as every living thing on this planet). Our ancestors knew this, and a vast majority of them would take note of the celestial patterns of the cosmos, marking days like the solstices as holy days, and making them a time to honor the fiery body that brings with it warmth and the ability for life itself to carry on.
Within modern Paganism and witchcraft today, plants and herbs play one of the most integral roles in our spiritual practice. Many of our spiritual tools are made from them (incense, oils, candles), and we incorporate them into sacred rites and ceremony, for the correspondences they hold. They even adorn our sacred space, just as they were originally used throughout time, adding further connection between herbs, the craft, and the sabbats.
Though it is not one of the three harvest sabbats like the sabbats that follow it, Midsummer has long been associated with being a time when the abundance of the earth starts to become more prevalent, especially within the plant kingdom. Thanks to the longer days and the warmth of the sun, many types of herbs and plants will begin to mature around this time of year, and when harvested, the solar energy that helped each plant to grow, remains within them and will be transferred to us when we use them. This, in essence marks a direct connection between what grows from the ground and the sun.

A unique way that we are able to work with herbs is to pull the chemical components and compounds found within different herbs and infuse that material into a balm or an ointment. The main purpose behind our Herbal Witchery box is for each of our members to become more acquainted with the different ways you are able to incorporate herbs into your spiritual and ritual practices. One of the easier and common ways is by imbibing the herbs directly in herbal teas or tisanes. Because of its strong herbal correspondences to solar energies and the sun, we decided to include a package of the Cup of Sun tea by Cattail Apothecary as a means for you to be able to connect with the solar energies of the sabbat through herbs.

Another way herbs are used and implemented within our spiritual practices is to burn them for a specific purpose or intent. One of the more commonly known ways to do such is with a “smudging ceremony,” which consists of burning a smudge stick and wafting its smoke amongst people or in a designated space.
CORRESPONDENCES:
- Desert Sage: (Artemesia tridentata) Desert sage has long been a popular herb to be used for cleansing and purification and is often used in healing rituals. Though it has a similar aroma to white sage, desert sage is not as strong when burning, making it popular with people that may not be able to normally use white sage.
- Lavender: (Lavendula officinale) is commonly associated with healing, peace and tranquility.
- Myrrh: (Commiphora myrrha) Myrrh is a resin that is burned to raise energy and the vibration of a space. It is also said to be used for protection, exorcism, healing and consecration.
- Angelica: (Angelica archangelica) Angelica is used for protection magick, exorcism and healing ceremonies. Some also use angelica to work with angelic beings as well as petitioning the divine.
It is believed that when burned, the corresponding properties (as well as the spirit of the herbs or plants) come forth to aid in the ritual or ceremony. The “Ascension” smudge stick is made up of a rare blend or herbs and resins meant to aid with healing, protection, purification and connecting with the divine.

Midsummer is often associated with abundance, growth, success, and prosperity, so we decided to include a crystal that held similar correspondences to the celebration of the Sabbat. Citrine is often considered to be a stone of great power and is associated with good luck. It is also believed that citrine is a stone that is powered by the sun and has a reputation of increasing energy while transmuting negative energy, making it a great stone to work with or have on an altar during summer solstice rituals.

PACKING & SHIPPING: Part of the costs of your box include the box and the packing material itself. The items listed below account for a good portion of the overall costs for the Midsummer Sabbat Boxes. Each Midsummer Sabbat Box is lined with paper padding and wrapping to add to the surprise of what we’ve curated for you. Shipping is also included in the total price. The cost to ship boxes is roughly $9.00. With that being said, we here at Sabbat Box wish to be as environmentally friendly that we can be and do our best to source packing supplies and material from companies that have the same beliefs we do, in that we want to make as little of an impact as possible on the environment, while also keeping the content of your boxes safe as they make their journey to you.
BOXES: Your boxes where made from high quality corrugated paper and are 100% recyclable. Try to find another use for your box. They are 9x9x3 on the inside. You could decorate your box to hold some magical supplies or use it again to ship something to someone or save it for another time when you may need it. If you have to get rid of it, please try to recycle it.
BROCHURES: Your brochures are printed on recyclable 16pt paper, which is sourced from sustainable forests.
TISSUE PAPER & FILLING: The green tissue paper is made from 100% recycled paper and is recyclable. The brown colored filler inside each box is made from scraps of recycled colored crinkle paper and is biodegradable.

We take pride in assembling each and every Sabbat Box by hand, no matter the amount of time it takes. We don't just throw your items inside a flat rate priority mail box like some other subscription box companies out there. We want your Sabbat Box to be delivered to you as beautifully as it left us, and it takes a tremendous amount of time to complete this task.
This includes folding the boxes together, individually cutting each sheet of tissue paper by hand, weighing out the crinkle paper for each box, designing the flyers, coupons, stickers and brochures to be printed professionally by commercial printers, individually placing each item within their corresponding bags, individually assembling the boxes, individually packing the tissue paper within each box by hand and also putting together and creating product packing. This timeframe doesn't even include the efforts made to manage the Sabbat Box website, the back end billing system, social media management, customer service inquiries, accounting, marketing, purchasing, networking, and so on. This is a labor of love and we enjoy serving the community!

As we travel past Beltane and the wheel of the year turns once more, you may notice that the days have grown longer, the sun’s rays shining warmer, and the fields, trees and flowers that blanketed the earth with a spectacle of color during the spring; are now happily basking in the golden hues of the midsummer sun. 
Midsummer, also known as the summer solstice or Litha, is a sabbat that marks the longest day of the year, with the shortest night. It is a celebration of the sun, growth, increase, empowerment, fertility and the abundance of the Earth that comes with the season. After the summer solstice occurs, days will start to grow shorter and shorter, until we reach the Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year). The summer solstice tends to occur on or around June 21, and may vary from year to year.

For this year’s Midsummer sabbat box, we have turned to plant kingdom for inspiration in order to curate your boxes…For everything that grows is something to be celebrated on Midsummer.

Whether being used to eat, to heal, to adorn, for spiritual purposes or to be made into something else, since the dawn of time, we as a people have turned to the flowers and herbs of the plant kingdom for our every need.
